Pinzgauer Spaziergang - hiking high above the Glemmtal valley

The long and stunning among the mountain paths

No question, the Pinzgauer Spaziergang is a MUST for ambitious hiking fans; and not only that, even for those who look for fabulous views of the breathtaking mountains of Salzburg, the Pinzgauer Spaziergang is the right choice. It doesn't get better, in the South, the snow-covered Hohe Tauern lure with cheesy motifs, while in the North, the stone mountains around Leogang, Lofer and Saalfelden form an amazing scenery.

Find the "special" on this route

If you hold the Joker Card in your hands, you are the boss, because the Pinzgauer Spaziergang starts at the Schattberg Ostgipfel, which you can easily reach on the Schattberg Express from Saalbach. Before we start now, we look around first, lace up the hiking boots, apply a layer of sunscreen on the face and take another sip from the bottle, because what comes now needs our full attention.

Up, down, just gorgeous

Via the Schattberg Westgipfel we hike in the direction of Seetörl and come along the Stemmerkogel, Saalbachkogel and Hochkogel. At the Klingertörl the way turns to the East and brings us closer and closer to our destination, the Schmittenhöhe high above Zell am See. Along the ridge, not only the beautiful alpine flowers next to the path enchant us, but above all the views into the Hohe Tauern, which make us sure that we have chosen a marvellous day.

Short facts about the Pinzgauer Spaziergang

  • Length: in total nearly 20 km
  • Ascent: approx. 700 metres of altitude
  • Descent: approx. 750 metres of altitude
  • Duration: about 7-8 hours
  • Highest point: 1,777 m
  • Refreshments: Hochsonnbergalm, Pinzgauer Hütte, Berggasthof Schmittenhöhe
  • Difficulty: technically not difficult, but long tour - endurance needed!

TIP: From Schmittenhöhe, it's best to take the Porsche Design Gondola down to the valley of Zell am See and cool your tired feet in the drinking water of Lake Zell. Then we simply climb into the Postbus, which brings us back to Saalbach and Hinterglemm!
